One of several medals by Paladino, a late 16th century medallist, of 15th century Popes. The reverse refers to Paul II's tireless pursuit of the leader of the Hussites, George Podebrady or Podiebrad, King of Bohemia (1458-71), here depicted as 'the wild boar out of the wood', Psalm LXXX, 13 (quoted by the Ven. Archdeacon Assheton Pownall, Num. Chron. 1884 p.173). The pope called a sacred Consistory at Rome in 1466 to proclaim an anathema against Podiebrad and raise an army against him. His kingdom was promised to the King of Hungary. The crusade was a failure, the army was defeated, and the anathema was ignored, but a magnificent medal celebrating the consistory was issued, the largest and most detailed Papal medal of the quattrocento
