Lot Essay

The prize medal for the Accademia Clementina at Bologna. The portrait is by Ercole Lelli, and medals of the same size but with a wider rim and the legend closer to the bust are signed on the truncation E. LELLI. (see Patrigiani 76). For this medal Raaffaele Tadolini has used Lelli's bust but removed his signature and added his own. There is only one medal known that can be said to be the work of Raffaele Tadolini, that of Gaetano Monti, 1788 (see Enrico No, Profilo della Medaglia Bolognese nel Settecento in Medaglia 19, 1984, pp.65-110)
