Lot Essay

The dies for the 1899 Pond never reached Pretoria, being seized at Delagoa Bay. The Mint Master gave orders for 102 counterstamped pieces to be produced (in the event 130 coins were counterstamped). It is thought that these coins were produced to mark the war-time re-opening of the mint for gold coinage, and that VIPs were present at this occasion.
