A SGRAFFITO-DECORATED REDWARE DISH
ATTRIBUTED TO SAMUEL TROXEL, ACTIVE 1823 - 1846, UPPER HANOVER TOWNSHIP, MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, DATED 1826
The circular dished form with flat base, rounded bouge, and coggle-wheel decorated rim centering two incised love-birds on a tulip and leaf-incised ground with inscribed German verse surround [translation], "Fish and fowl do not belong to rough fellows, but should be served only to gentlemen. May 16, 1826" -- 11in. diam.
