Lot Essay
With its square back and fully reeded crest arms and sides, this form was derived from Sheraton's Drawing Book (London, 1793) plate 35, and was most popular among cabinetmakers in Baltimore during the first quarter of the 19th century. Each cabinetmaker embellished the form in varying degrees of reeding and decoration. This sofa with its raked back and bowed seat it is nearly identical to one made for Dr. William Hilleary (1775-1834) of Frederick, Maryland, illustrated and discussed in Gregorie R. Weidman et al., Classical Maryland 1815-1845 (Baltimore, 1993) pp. 113-114, fig. 138. The sofa made for Dr. Hilleary is documented to Camp's shop by the original bill now in the Maryland Historical Society Manuscripts Collection.
