Lot Essay

The original, showing the sitter full length, forms the left wing of the altarpiece of the Incredulity of Saint Thomas, of 1613/15, in the Muses Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Antwerp (D. Freedberg, The Life of Christ after the Passion - Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, VII, 1983, pp.87/9, no.19, fig.50). Rockox, numismatist, antiquarian and connoisseur, was burgomaster of Antwerp.
