The pictures in the present lot are characteristic for the artist, who is said to have worked in Rome in the second half of the 1640's. No works remain form this Italian period. The present pair therefore is probably to be dated to the 1660's, when he was active in Utrecht. The use of the cliff and the fence as background, for the figures is influenced by Pieter van Laer.
