The copy is in the same direction as the engraving by Schelte Bolswert (Holl.293) after the prototype, signed and dated 1638, on canvas, 120 x 192 cm, in the Muses Royaux des Beaux Arts, Antwerp (see R-A d'Hulst, Jacob Jordaens, 1982, p.167, fig.137).
The subject was a favourite theme of Jordaens; the prototype in Antwerp is his earliest interpretation of it.
