Lot Essay

The prototype has not been traced. The composition seems to derive from Berchem, since the goat and the donkey appear in almost identical form in the picture in the Louvre, inv. no.2318, while the cow resembles that in the picture in the Gemldegalerie, Dresden, inv. no.1481 (A. Walther, ed., Gemldegalerie Dresden - Alte Meister, 1992, p.118, ill.).
