Lot Essay

The present whereabouts of the prototype, signed, on panel, 41 x 36 cm, is not known; it was with E. Slatter, London, in 1952. Buchanan acquired it in 1808 and afterwards it was in the collections of Lord Colbourne and Lord Cranworth. It was with Koetser, New York, in 1946 (see C. Hofstede de Groot, A Catalogue Raisonn etc., II, 1908, no.282).
