The prototype, signed and dated 1656, on canvas, 175.5 x 210.5 cm, is in the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen, Kassel (A. Bredius, revised by H. Gerson, Rembrandt - The Complete Edition of the Paintings, 1969, pp.601/2, no.525, figs.434, 436/7).
The subject is taken from Genesis XLVIII.
