The overall shape of this cupboard is closely related to that of the North German Schapp, which was produced from the late 17th Century in several towns such as Hamburg, Danzig and Lbeck. However, the rocaille carving of the present cupboard is typically Dutch, and indicates that it was probably made in one of Holland's eastern provinces, where influences from German cabinet-making was undoubtedly strong.
