The general shape and decoration of this hall bench relates to numerous designs for headboards of state beds in Marot's Nouveaux Livre d'Appartement. In these designs, the panelled strapwork toprail decorated with flower-heads features as the cresting of the headboard. Closely related female busts were often incorporated in stucco wall decorations, executed to Marot's specifications, such as those in the hall of Huis Schuylenburg in The Hague, which were modelled by Giovanni Battista Luraghi (1675-1736) in 1715.
