Second half 17th Century
Carved on all sides, the rectangular grey-veined white marble top above the scaled S-shaped acanthus-edged legs decorated with roses and meandering snakes, the pierced shaped stretcher centred by an eagle and flanked by oak-leaves and rose-bunches, the painted decoration possibly original, minor restorations, minor replacements to the carving of the eagle

The aurcicular decoration of this table is confined to the scaling on the legs. All the other carved elements are conceived in a classical fashion, such as the floral trails and the rose and grape bunches, which refer to marital prosperity. The table is carved on all sides and may therefore have been used as a centre table rather than a side table what is generally assumed. A virtually identical example, but with a cherub blowing a horn, was sold by David Style, Wateringbury House, Christie's House sale, 31 May 1978, lot 109.
