Lot Essay

Edwards and Roberts, who retailed this cupboard, were based at 21 Wardour Street in the 1840s as 'Antique and Modern cabinet-makers and importers of ancient furniture'. On occasion the distinction between the two became blurred when they embellished an older piece of furniture prior to selling it (C. Wainwright, 'The Dark Ages of Art Revived', The Connoisseur, June, 1978, pp. 95-105).
