Lot Essay

The decoration of large stars was a fashionable motif in Dutch cabinet-making between circa 1690-1710. These stars, which are often incorporated in complicated patterns composed of constrasting timbers, generally embellish the doors of cabinets-on-stand, which are hence often referred to as sterkabinetten. The present cupboard, which was probably executed around 1670-1680, is an early example of this decoration.
