Lot Essay
Many of the themes used with wheelengraving are related to various aspects of social and daily life, and to memorable occasions. Popular themes are coats of arms, congratulations, the Republic, friendship, etc. Inscriptions are often depicted with a fitting or explanatory depiction which is allegorical or illustrative. A characteristic inscription is Hansie in de kleder together with a child in the cellar or a pregnant woman, which symbolises the approaching birth. Maternity glasses such as this lot, are often engraved with a woman who has just given birth, lying in bed and an infant in a cradle, inscribed with the text 't Welvaaren van de kraamvrouw en 't kintie. Such maternity or kandeel glasses were probably used for warm wine mixed with cinnamon, egg yokes and sugar (kandeel), or they were used as gift in memory of the joyful event.
