The attribution has been kindly suggested by Drs. C.J.A. Wansink of the RKD, The Hague. It is to be compared with the picture, signed and dated 1844, of similar dimensions, offered at Sotheby's London, 7 May 1986, lot 12, ill., and therefore to be dated to the same time. By then the great fashion of large room decorations, covering the walls from plinth to ceiling, had already extinghuised. It is in this tradition that Uppink started his career in the late 18th Century. See for instance the set of room decorations sold at Christie's London, 12 January 1996, lots 156/7, ill. Although in the present lot the size has been adapted, the composition recalls the decorative schemes, which became fashionable and which purpose was to bring nature into the house (see Langs Velden en Wegen, exhibition catalogue, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam 1998).
