Lot Essay

In 1939 Nandalal Bose designed a poster for the Congress Session at Haripura, titled Man with Hookah, which Bose admitted was inspired by Kalighat paintings. This work by Jamini Roy is almost identical to Bose's poster, but it is most likely that both artists drew independently upon the Kalighat school as their source of inspiration.
