Lot Essay

In the early stages, Jamini Roy's artistic development was as much a search for form as for subject. Brata art, ritual paintings on domestic mud walls, was a major source of inspiration for Roy. In agricultural communities the symbol of an elephant and rider is used to celebrate a wedding, a birth, or to honour Lakshmi.

This work was bought directly from the artist by the present owner.
