Benode Behari Mukerjee trained under Nandalal Bose at Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan. Until the 1940's he was a painter of landscapes and rural life. His childhood in rural Bengal provided him with his greatest inspiration, and the local Santhals remained a favourite subject. He was also deeply influenced by Far Eastern art, not for its Pan-Asian politics, but for its artistic innovations. He adopted the scroll format and the calligraphic brush-technique evolving a highly personal language to create paintings of introspection and tranquility.
