Lot Essay

This work belongs to Ram Kumar's early 'figurative phase'. The figures he depicts in these works from the 1950's are reminiscent of the characters in his novels. The central character in many of his novels is a middle class, middle-aged man, incapable of responding to the daily routine of city life. The characters in both his paintings and novels are lonely and despairing.
