Lot Essay

The Horse is one of the most powerful symbols in Husain's oeuvre. In 1951 on his return from a long trip to Europe where he had seen the equestrian figures of contemporary Italian Painter Marino Marini, Husain executed his first painting of a horse as a symbolic motif. Husain's horse is not a plastic form treated to stylistic variations, instead it is a sensous creatre that has become a personal symbol resonating with archetypes.
