An influential member of the Novembergruppe, Hans Siebert von Heister combines in his work the intensity of colour of Expressionism with the forceful lines of Futurism and Cubism's fracturing of the surface plane. This new kind of Expressionism by international artists such as Delaunay, Braque and Picasso were regularly on view at Herwath Walden's Galerie Der Sturm, and undoubtedly proved influential to a new generation of artists intent on finding a revolutionary new language of expression. The closing statements of the manifesto of the Novembergruppe were: "We send our fondest greetings to all those artists who have heard the call and feel responsible - Cubists, Futurist, and Expressionists. Join us!"
The apocalyptic and ecstatic colouration of the work of such artists as Johannes Molzahn, Otto Moeller, Fritz Stuckenberg and Hans Siebert von Heister is summed up in Molzahn's 1919 Manifesto of Absolute Expressionism in Der Sturm, where the destruction of the old order and the rising of a new order in its aftermath is proclaimed: "We want to pour oil onto the fire - fan the tiny glow into a flame - span the earth - make it quiver - and beat more fiercely - living and pulsating cosmos - steaming universe."
