Emil Nolde's inability to have children has been seen as a partial explanation for the numerous appearances of family groups, and tenderly expressed 'mother and child scenes'. Whilst this is true for his oils and many of his prints (lot 249 being a case in point), we see Nolde occasionally allowing himself greater freedom of expression in his graphic work. The almost grotesque figures in Familie echo the earlier Fantasy series of etchings from 1905
