The present watercolour was executed when Davis was judge and magistrate of Benares.
Jaunpur is situated to the north-west of Benares and had been at the centre of the Muslim Sharki dynasty during the fifteenth century. Davis' drawing of the Fort constructed during the reign of Firoz Shah in 1360 is an important record of the building which came down in 1859.
