Lot Essay

The Purana Qila (or old fort) is situated at the eastern edge of Delhi, between the ring road and the Jumna. The fort wall, completed by Emperor Sher Shar Sur in 1550, is built of red sandstone and is more than a mile long. It is punctuated by three gates, of which this one is now used as the main entrance.
The Fine Art Society, London, exhibited Scott's painting and sketches of India and Kashmir in 1889 and also after his death in 1932.
