Lot Essay

Alfred Shepherd was the son of George 'Sydney'.Shepherd (1784-1862) and brother of Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (1793-1864). Fanny Shepherd was his younger sister who in the 1850s kept her father's house at 40 Upper Seymour Street.
Alfred became a wood engraver, a trade which was followed in turn by his son and namesake.
