Plate 38 bound at front, coloured engraved title, 36 coloured aquatints by Reeve, Fielding, Hunt, Bentley, Pyall, Hughes, and Edge, after Grindlay, Westall, Stanfield, Roberts, Purser, Witherington, Fielding, and Daniel, and coloured by J.B. Hogarth. (Lacking volume II lithographic title.) Contemporary half morocco, spine gilt, gilt edges (corners bumped, some light rubbing on spine and hinges, a few small areas of loss).
A fine copy. 'Next to Daniell the most attractive colour plate book on India' (Tooley). The work was issued in six parts between 1826 and 1830 at a cost of 2. 2s. each. The subjects, including scenes and views of Bombay, Golconda, Ellora and Guzerat, are from a collection of sketches and drawings made by Grindlay while he was in the service of the East India Company. It is rare in such works for the name of the colourist, in this case J.B. Hogarth, to be given. Abbey Travel 442; Tooley 239; Colas 1333.
