Lady Hardinge of Penshurst
An elephant's tusk, set with a shield and coronet and a lid in silver gilt, the shield engraved. 'To H.E. The Lady Hardinge of Penshurst C.I. from The Women of India In memory of Dec 23rd 1912', the lid engraved 'But righteousness is of her who believeth in God... ', the tusk approximately 90cm. straight line length, 11cm. diameter (slight loss to coronet)
[Containing:] A printed and hand-coloured scroll with four illuminated vignettes within border of gilt piping, bearing an address to Lady Hardinge. - 'The women of India, representing all communities, unite in the wish to express their horror at the grievous crime which by a merciful Providence was frustrated [etc]' with ten signatures inserted, approximately 63 x 34cm. Ivory roller attached at upper edge, silver and gilt thread tassel at lower edge, the whole backed with silk. [Together with:] A commemorative album - To H.E. the Lady Hardinge of Penshurst C.I. from The Women of India in Memory of Dec 23rd 1912 . Bombay: The Times Press, n.d. [1913], 87 leaves, 4. Vellum, blocked in gilt, top edge gilt, other edges uncut, by The Times Press, Bombay, in a silk and satin embroidered soft case, monogram 'WH', baroness's coronet.
