Three ambrotype photographs, two approx. 4 x 3 in., gilt-edged arched-top card mounts, the third 4 x 5 in., arched corners in similar mount, passe-partout, one with gilt-metal hanging ring, each with small paper label on reverse, one identifying sitter Martin Norman Sent from India. (3)

Lot Essay

Martin Norman (1831-1859) was the son of Robert Cumming and Emily Norman, and was baptised at Chislehurst on 16 October 1831. The India Register of 1853 lists Norman, Martin as a Madras Civil Servant, sixth class, season of appointment 1852. He does not appear in subsequent years. The photographs in this lot comprise one portrait of Norman, seated holding a gun; his carriage outside a bungalow with two Indian servants (illus.); and Norman with his horse against a sheet or similar cloth backdrop which is held aloft by a servant.
