With thirty-three individual photographs and six multiple-part panoramas, albumen prints, the majority approx. 8 x 10 in., five smaller to approx. 5 x 8 in., two four-part panoramas, each approx. 8 x 40 in., one three-part panorama approx. 7 x 28 in., another similar, the separate prints loosely laid in album, and two two-part panoramas each approx. 8 x 20 in., a few only captioned and one dated 1879 in pencil on mounts, half brown leather (front cover detached), ruled gilt, oblong large 4to.

Lot Essay

An album by an unidentified photographer, apparently documenting the early days of the Second Afghan War. Panoramas of the camps and detail views of the camps; two still-life photographs showing fragments of antiquities; group portraits including one of Afghan gunmen; details of ancient city walls; cities, possibly including Jallalabad and Dakha; local topography; and a view of British cavalry and artillery awaiting the arrival of Amir Yakub Khan, who was travelling from Kabul to Gundamuk to sign the ill-fated Treaty of Peace with Major Cavaguari, May 1879.
