Lot Essay

Castle Howard, Yorkshire was designed by the playwrite, turned architect, Sir John Vanbrugh (d. 1726) for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle. It is one of greatest English Baroque country houses, centred by the great dome, and the building of it employed the skills of Nicholas Hawksmoor (d. 1736), another great English 18th Century architect.
