The signature on the dial probably refers to Nicholas-Robert Robin (1775-1816), who later became horloger to Louis XVIII, or his brother Jean-Joseph Robin (1806-1858). Both were sons of Robert Robin, the celebrated Parisian Horloger du duc de Chartres (1742-1799), whose career was assisted by Louis XVI by granting him lodgings in the Galeries du Louvre (1785) and employment at the Royal Court (1778) (Augarde, Les Ouvriers du Temps, La Pendule Paris de Louis XVI Napolon I, Geneva, 1996, pp. 239 and 254).
