Lot Essay

The chest's 'tower-cornered' top features on a chest-of-drawers pattern in Gillows' 1789 Estimate Sketch Book (see L. Boynton, Gillows Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 115) and also on a 'commode dressing table' pattern with pillar supports in Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793 (pl. 25 from part II). Its Egyptian handles with sphynx bas relief medallions and the Grecian-scrolled stump feet reflect the antique style promoted by George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808. A related chest-of-drawers was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 4 June 1998, lot 147.
