Lot Essay

The pilasters' voluted and palm-flowered 'Roman' trusses reflect the antique fashion promoted by Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807. The console-legs of pier tables designed in 1814 by the Edinburgh cabinet-maker, William Trotter, for Paxton House, Berwickshire, featured related palm-flowered volutes, and it is possible that this bookcase was also executed in Edinburgh.
