With mahogany and satinwood serpentine slatted sliding top revealing three panels inlaid with ebony, the central panel banded to both sides in tulipwood and enclosing a hinged mirror, above a sliding compartment cover enclosing two drawers and a well with central divider, the side panels enclosing fitted interiors, the panels inlaid with ebony lines and banded in tulipwood, on square tapering legs and block feet, with printed label attached to the underside 'M.BUTLER, LTD., 26, 126, 127 & 128 UPPER ABBEY STREET, DUBLIN'

Lot Essay

The label attached to the underside of the dressing-table refers to the Dublin based furniture firm of Michael Butler who was based at Liffey Street (1877-1884) and then at his Abbey Street warehouse between 1886-1903. Butler advertised as a 'Collector and Restorer of 'Chippendale', 'Adams' & 'Sheraton'' and the firm specialised in reproducing Irish 18th Century mahogany furniture (D. Fitzgerald, 'Dublin Directories and Trade Labels', Furniture History, 1985, p. 262).
