Lot Essay

The pier-glass displays a rare form of verre glomis tablet with patterns of hearth-stoves derived from an early 19th Century trade catalogue; while its panels of flowered acanthus are surmounted by ribbon-tied trophies of hearth equipment. Its foliated and hollowed cornice wreathed with spheres relates to that of a verre glomis pier-glass bearing the inscription 'Del Vecchios Looking Glass Warehouse' for Vecchio and Company, who were established in Dublin in 1797 and advertised as 'looking glass manufacturers' in 1804. The pier-glass was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 8 February 1996, lot 384. The label of Thomas Fentham, listed in the Strand, London between 1794 and 1820, appears on a related pier-glass, with verre glomis tablet and pilasters, offered anonymously, Sotheby's London, 7 July 1989, lot 127. A closely related pier glass was sold from the estate of Ambassador Pamela Harrissan, Sotheby's New York, 19-21 May 1997, lot 379.
