Lot Essay

The sofa, with Grecian-scrolled head and turned stump feet, relates to a 'Chaise longue' pattern in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1808 (pl. 64). The sofa's voluted flutes relate to sofas supplied in the early 19th Century for Erddig, Denbighshire (see M. Waterson, Erddig, National Trust Guidebook, 1988, p. 25) and others supplied for Cleveland House, London (sold by The Lord Barnard, Raby Castle, Co. Durham, Christie's house sale, 10-11 October 1994, lots 46 and 47).
