According to the 1968 Dedham Historical Society catalogue, the elephant patttern border was created by Charles Davenport for the Republican party during the presidency of Teddy Roosevelt. Finding he had miscalculated the spacing of the elephants, Davenport was left with a small gap. His insertion of the baby elephant was the answer to the problem, and added immensely to the appeal of this design.
