Lot Essay

This handsome hob grate, with golden cornucopia conjoined by a starred roundel, recalls the French antique fashion promoted by Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807 and relates in particular to an 'X' frame seat pattern in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture, 1808, pl. 53.
