Woven in wools and silks, one depicting the visitation of the Virgin Mary to her cousin Elizabeth and the other Zacharias and Elizabeth, both scenes within an oval medallion with a landscape beyond, within a floral wreath surrounded by tulips and roses and within a later blue and yellow outer slip, areas of reweaving and patching, within a later moulded, ebonised and parcel-gilt rectangular frame

Lot Essay

These panels depict the Visitation with the Virgin Mary visiting her cousin Elisabeth just after the Annunciation. Mary had just conceived while the elder Elisabeth, married to Zacharias, was in her sixth month of pregnancy with John the Baptist after a lifetime of barrenness.
