Lot Essay

The stamp 'JACOB FRERES RUE MESLEE' was used by Georges II Jacob (1768-1803) and his brother Franois-Honor-Georges (1770-1841), between 1796 and 1803. In 1803, when Georges II died, the father Georges Jacob, who had handed over the running of his firm to his sons in 1796, re-entered in partnership with his son Franois-Honor-Georges and stamped their work 'JACOB.D.R.MESLEE'. A related pair of Restauration bergres from a suite of furniture with scrolled dolphins arms was sold anonymously Sotheby's Monaco, 12 December 1998, lot 93.
