A Voyage round the world, in the years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV... compiled...by Richard Walter. London: John & Paul Knapton for the Author, 1748. One volume in two, 4 (29.3 x 22.8cm.) 42 engraved plates, charts and maps, 41 folding. 12pp. list of subscribers. (Some offsetting of text onto plates, tears to three folding plates, three plates shaved with slight loss.) Contemporary mottled calf (spine and extremities worn). Provenance: George Scott, Woolston Hall, Essex (subscriber, armorial bookplate, numerous manuscript notes).
FIRST EDITION, subscriber's copy, extra-illustrated at the end with a mounted broadside, entitled: This is to inform the Curious, that there is to be Seen (Alive) at the ["Chequer Inn", in manuscript] in this Town a Wonderful Sea-Monster, generally allow'd to be a Sea-Lioness, taken on the Suffolk-Coast, Dec.23, 1749. Anson's voyage in the Centurion was undertaken under orders to use his squadron of eight ships to attack Spanish possessions in the Pacific and on the western coast of South America. Although aided by the provident sinking in storms of a number of Spanish war ships, and himself sustaining losses to ships and men, Anson was singularly successful, the high point of the expedition being the capture of the Spanish Manila-to-Acapulco treasure galleon on 20 June 1743. His own share of the 500,000 treasure made his fortune. Hill p.317; Lowndes p.49; Sabin 1625. (2)
