Commander Richard Aldworth Oliver (1811-1889)

A Series of Lithographic Drawings from Sketches in New Zealand. London: Dickinson Bros., [1852]. Large 2 (58.5 x 43cm.) Small format yellow-paper slip addressed to subscribers bound at front. 9 hand-coloured lithographic plates on 8 leaves by Dickinson & Co. after Oliver, some heightening with gum arabic. (Outer blank margin of title and text leaf neatly repaired.) Original cloth-backed wrappers, letterpress title on upper cover (neat repairs to margins of covers and free endpapers), modern cloth portfolio.

A FINE SERIES OF PLATES. Commander Oliver intended issuing a number of parts but interest was evidently insufficient, and only the present nine plates were ever published. The subjects include an excellent portrait of Te Rangihaeta, fighting chief to Te Rauperaha; a number of other portraits; fine topographical views (the Kirikiri Falls) and views representing aspects of Maori life (a Korero, a Tangi). Tooley notes that the work appeared in both coloured and uncoloured versions. Abbey Travel 592; Hocken p.167; Tooley (1954) 349.
