The Roof of the World being the narrative of a journey over the high plateau of Tibet to the Russian frontier and the Oxus sources on the Pamir. Edinburgh: R. & R. FIRST EDITION OF THE THIS IMPORTANT WORK ON THE EXPLORATION OF CENTRAL ASIA. Gordon, accompanied by Captains Bidddulph and Trotter, explored the highlands of the Tien Shan plateau. The work is illustrated with litho-photographic 'facsimiles' of his original sketches, and he includes accounts of the Chadur Kul Lake (with its Russian fort) and the the wild sheep, or ovis poli, 'hitherto regarded as a half mythical animal'. He had initially accompanied Forsyth's Yarkand and Kashgar expedition of 1873, and a good account of the course of this expedition is given in the first four chapters of the present work.
