The watercolour shows the wagon loaded with Baines's craft (intended to navigate the Zambesi) at the outset of the expedition: '...sacks of meal were laid in the bottom. On these were placed two of the longer sections of our boat, filled with light goods, packed so as to injure the copper as little as possible, and above these again were laid two others reversed, so that the convexity of their bottom just filled up the wagon tent, leaving barely room to lash the bow and stern sections, laid end to end, the broad part of one to the narrow part of the back of the other'. (T Baines, Explorations in South-West Africa, London, 1864, p.21). For the location of the subject, the Wittewater Range in South West Africa ('the singular granite peaks which had been compared to Westminster Abbey'), see T.Baines, op cit., pp.30-33.
