A Lutheran and missionary, the artist established a mission station, Hermon, in Lesotho between 1885 and 1908, on behalf of the Socit des Missions Evangliques de Paris. His memoir, L'Art dans L'Afrique australe, Impressions et Souvenirs de Mission, was published in 1911 and recalled Asa Senthebane who sat for one of the present portraits: 'Je ne veux pas oublier notre prcieux Asa Senthebane, un vrai matre Jacques...un excellent bon tout faire, et cela depuis au moins seize ans. Cela nous sera un vrai chagrin de nous sparer de lui et de ses enfants...' (F. Christol, op. cit., p.129)
