Half-titles, tiles in red and black. 2 folding maps, printed in three colours, loose in pockets at back, plates and maps (some double-page, or coloured). (Light spotting to first and last few leaves.) Original blue cloth gilt, t.e.g. (light soiling, corners rubbed, head and foot of spines bumped). Provenance: Eleanor Wodehouse? (ne Arnold, later Lady Sandhurst, presentation inscription 'With very best wishes to the best of friends Rob.F.Scott May 15th 1907'). First edition, second impression, of Scott's account of his National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904.

A fine letter thanking Lady Sandhurst (daughter of Mathew Arnold) for her gift, a 'small volume with its inscription', 'you are just the sort of friend who would realise which possessions are most highly treasured when one is cut off from the ordinary intercourse of civilization', recalling her visit to the "Discovery", noting that the expedition is 'preparing to go on the 16th only a short week I'm saying goodbye to my little son in most spare hours' and ending 'I would like to come and say farewell to you & will try to do so - but if prevented you will know that I'm grateful for much kindness'

A rare ephemeral item, apparently issued to accompany Shackelton's lecture at the R.G.S. shortly after his return from his first expedition. (6)
