Details
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, Louis B. Bernacchi, and Apsley George Benet Cherry-Garrard (editors)
The South Polar Times. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1907-1914. 3 volumes, 4 (27.5 x 21.1cm.) Titles in red and black (vols.I-II), text and title in ochre and blue (vol.III), plates and illustrations, some chromolithographed, after Herbert Ponting, Edward Wilson and others. (Some leaves in vol.I and II detached as usual, small sections of 'title' adhering to facing 'frontispiece' in vol.II.) Original blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, the upper covers with gilt lettering and rope-work surrounding centrally-placed inset pictorial cloth panels, g.e. (very light scuffing to spines of vols.I and II, small tear to head of spine of vol.I).
Provenance: Robert Falcon Scott (vols.I and II); Kathleen Scott (vol.III); by descent (all three volumes).
A highly important set of this cornerstone to any collection of printed works on Antarctic exploration. Volumes I and II are both from the limited edition of 250 copies, these copies numbered 2. Volume III is a presentation copy, presumably to Kathleen Scott, with variant wording to limitation leaf, omitting the words 'This Copy is No.' and inserting 'Presentation Copy' in their stead.
The South Polar Times was an exact reproduction of the original which appeared month by month during the winters of 1902 and 1903, edited by Shackleton and Louis Bernacchi, with articles, stories, poems and drawings supplied by various members of the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904, and, edited by Cherry-Garrard, by members of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-1913.
